Final Reflection

The future of social justice is going to be full of progress as well as having to face more challenges.  People are sharing information and spreading awareness about issues that we are continuously facing today and this is a right step into fighting against the unfair systems that are set up. This is a sign that there is hope for social justice but at the same time as awareness is being spread a lot of misinformation is being spread as well this is causing there to be a rift in our communities and is putting a halt into the growth that I believe we all truly want.  During this course and doing these blogs weekly I have felt as though it is much easier to connect to social justice issues and the importance of learning about and understanding these issues. Not only do we have to understand the recent events about these issues but we have to learn about their history and really get down to the root cause and what the initial issue was. As time goes on the issues continue to...

LGBTQ+ rights & Women's Rights

LGBTQ+  rights achieved a victory in the Dominican Republic where a rule that was banning gay sex gor members of the police and armed forces. The ban that was set before was used to punish, fire, and humiliate LGBTQ members in the security forces. The ruling to strike down this ban is a huge win because it gives LGBTQ members  the right to be who they are and be with who they choose to be and not have to worry about their preferences ruin their opportunities in their field of work.  This ruling is a step forward in the right direction but there is still a need to get rid of more forms of discrimination against the LGBTQ community. Everywhere across the world needs to protect their citizens from being harassed, discriminated against by the law, and continue to promote equality. A group that has supported LGBTQ rights is the Human Rights Campaign. They are one of the largest organization's that have helped provide education and advocacy and continued support of LGBTQ rights...

Bill number: Lb 87 Introduced by: Myron Dorn on January 10, 2025 Referred to the Health and Human Services Committee Hearing notice issued for January 31, 2025 It currently is in the committee and has not advanced to a floor debate.  Bill LB 87 requires the commission for the blind and visually impaired to develop a statewide support service provider program for people who are deaf or blind. Services that will be included from this bill are assistance to live independently, access to visual, situational, and environmental information, services of a human guide, facilitation of brief, casual exchanges of spoke or signed conversations, and assistance with daily living activities. These are just some of the things mentioned but there are more things discussed if you would like to check out the full contents of the bill.  I chose this bill because I feel l...

Reflections on Religion & Spirituality

Reflections on Religion & Spirituality Three groups that stood out to me were immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as foster youth. I think these communities are the ones I feel a stronger sense of understanding and I know the challenges that all three groups face having worked with kids before, knowing immigrant families and the struggles they have been through as well as having many friends who are part of the LGTBQ+ community myself included.  These three groups are constantly faced with instability, exploring their identities, discrimination, trauma, and displacement but I have seen people from these groups come out stronger than they were before and working through all their problems to better their lives. Gaining an understating of a person and their spiritual and religious background is important so that I can offer support appropriately.  Spirituality and religion are things that people resonate with on a deep personal level. For the youth group it can me a form...

Immigration

Did the  30 Days  video influence your views regarding undocumented immigrants or immigration policy in any way?    My feelings about immigration I think are very different than a lot of people. I do not think immigration is terrible and I do not think we should be so hostile and negative towards immigrants. The video only reminded me of the reality of what immigrants face to this day and the unfair way that they are being perceived and treated. Not only the struggles and stereotypes that many continue to face and have it shape their lives. Watching this video just made me respect immigrants who are trying to improve their lives. I think that we have been given opportunities that they do not have and I think it is important to lend a hand to those who are actually here to make a positive change. Many people, including Frank in the 30 Days video, make the argument that "We are a nation of laws...and they're breaking the law" (and therefore should be sent back to Mexi...

Reflecting on Diversity

With whom did you identify most strongly in the video and why? (a list of the characters in the film is provided below)   I relate to both Roberto as well as Hugh. I am Mexican American and just like Hugh shared in the film he was nervous about being in the situation he was in because he does not know what to expect. For me even today I sometimes have fear or anxiety of what waits for me when I go out to public spaces. I never know what to expect but it's always in the back of my mind if I'm going to get mocked when I speak or am I going to get called a racial slur just because I decided to go out? These are things that have happened countless times and it is something that is hard to ignore andI have to think of. I also feel as if I can talk about it but there will always be nerves when talking about subjects like these but I am learning to be more confident in speaking out about my experiences.  What moment in the film is most memorable for you, and why is it signific...

Half The Sky pt. 2

All of the stories I felt left a huge impact on me but the first two about Female Genital Cutting and Prostitution stuck out to me the most. I can't choose one over the other. These two stories threw a lot of information about how women are treated and looked at in different parts of the world. It also gives us insights on what the women living in these conditions believe and how some of them have grown used to living the way that they do. I do not believe many people in the United States are fully aware. I do not think these situations are covered as much as they need to be. There was a quote that was said towards the beginning of the documentary, Edna Adan says "Unless they see the reality they'll never understand the severity of the situation." This hit me hard because it is one of the most truthful things I have heard. Even if people are to hear about this or be informed, they have no idea what it is like. Just like the head nurse Jayne Peters who shared that she ...
