Bill number: Lb 87
Introduced by: Myron Dorn on January 10, 2025
Referred to the Health and Human Services Committee
Hearing notice issued for January 31, 2025
It currently is in the committee and has not advanced to a floor debate.
Bill LB 87 requires the commission for the blind and visually impaired to develop a statewide support service provider program for people who are deaf or blind. It is supposed to help people with these disabilities to be more independent and be able to participate in society more. Services that will be included from this bill are assistance to live independently, access to visual, situational, and environmental information, services of a human guide, facilitation of brief, casual exchanges of spoke or signed conversations, and assistance with daily living activities. These are just some of the things mentioned but there are more things discussed if you would like to check out the full contents of the bill.
I chose this bill because I feel like it is important to find ways to make life more accessible to those who have a disability. I believe there is always more that we can do to help those who have a disability to those who are underserved and face a ton of barriers in everyday life. People who are deaf or blind face a lot of struggles when it comes to participation in community as well as communication. I think this bill helps bring attention to those inequalities and this bill will help give better access to information and support that will help people who are deaf or blind be able to participate in society more. I also think this helps those who may not think about people with disabilities more and realize that they should be helped just as much as anyone else. I also believe that this helps society as a whole adjust to disabilities being normal and not as something that should be looked at as a great difference between a person who does not have a disability. I think this will also lower the stereotypes that people with a disability face.
